With the kids home all day, it may feel like summer is in full throttle. Our therapists are here to help you make it through the days with ways to increase your child’s independence at home. By introducing and building on these concepts, your child will gain tools to be more independent throughout their life.
Use “Grandma’s Rule” – Also known as the Premack Principle, “Grandma’s Rule” teaches the basic “first-then” concept. This is the simplest way to establish a schedule for your child. For example: first you have to practice piano, then you can go outside.
Create a Visual Schedule – A visual chart or map of the day helps your child see the big picture, and tracking makes for a great incentive! Visual schedules can be made with paper and pictures or through an app — one of our favorites is Choiceworks.
Keep It Simple – Begin with only a couple of tasks. Seeing a schedule for an entire day may be too overwhelming. Once more than 1-2 tasks can be completed independently, separate lists into morning and afternoon.
Reinforce Independence – Once your child completes a task, provide a reinforcer like play time or a treat. Work slowly up to where your child can do multiple tasks on the schedule independently, and fade your prompts gradually. If your child initially needs step-by-step instruction, try to teach by example and see if they are successful by following your lead.
Incorporate Fun Activities – Be sure to intersperse fun activities with tasks. No one wants to do multiple chores in a row without a break!
